Biosketch: 

With broad training in sociology, and both quantitative and qualitative methodology, Dr. Tickamyer has had an active program of research, teaching/training, outreach, and service throughout the forty plus years of her academic career. She has conducted research on social and spatial inequalities, rural poverty and livelihoods, gender and development, and social welfare policy in the U.S. and Indonesia, and recently has extended these topics to include resilience in disaster and climate change. Much of this research has been externally funded through grants from NSF, USDA, and other public and private foundations. She is the author or editor of six books (one forthcoming in January), eighty refereed journal articles and book chapters and many other papers, presentations, and consultancies. She spent eighteen years on the faculty at the University of Kentucky, thirteen plus at Ohio University, and ten at Penn State. She served as the past head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education in the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State, a past president of the Rural Sociological Society (RSS), and a past editor of its flagship journal, Rural Sociology. She has served on numerous editorial boards, and has had elective office in the American Sociological Association and the Southern Sociology Society as well as the RSS. Throughout her career she has been an active member of gender and women’s studies programs (at After retiring from Penn State in 2020, she has remained research active, currently serving as coPI on two grants that run from 2020-2023: one from NSF, “NNA Track 1: Pursuing Opportunities for Long-term Arctic Resilience for Infrastructure and Society” and one from USDA, “Understanding Natural Resource Economic Development in Rural America.”  Additionally, she has a book with Siti Kusujiarti under contract with Palgrave Macmillan on gender, disaster, and climate change and is working collaboratively with researchers at Penn State and Monash University in Australia on similar topics.
